Meet Our Weatherstripping Guru, Carl Bagala
If you reach out to us, or stop by our shop, you are likely to talk with Carl Bagala. Brother to owner, Marc Bagala, Carl has been working in window restoration and weatherstrip installation for over 25 years. So you might say you’ve reached the right person!
Carl operates and maintains our 100 year old roll-forming machinery that makes our metal interlocking weatherstripping products.
When Bagala Window Works acquired some of the machinery formerly owned by the Kammerer family, they were rescuing the precious equipment that had manufactured the metal weatherstripping they had come to depend on for more than 35 years. They were committed to continuing to make these products available that had served such a vital role in window preservation for over 100 years. This equipment didn’t come with any owner’s manuals or digital directions. There are no computerized control panels or automation. Run by the previous owners through experience and ingenuity only – it was now up to Carl Bagala to take over and “figure it out”.
Luckily, along with a lot of hands-on experience, Carl is very mechanical and likes to figure out how things work. His background being a machinist and a welder sure come in handy, and he’s very used to getting his hands dirty. Since these machines require a certain amount of tinkering to produce perfectly flat and consistent metal products, his intuitiveness and insight into machinery is invaluable.
“These machines run by feel, taking handmade to a whole new level! Using them is really an art, understanding the machine, how to feed the metal into the machine so it comes out totally flat, even and consistent.”
~ Carl Bagala
Carl was happy to take on this new endeavor for the company that is now a subsidiary business called, Window Restoration Supply. He had previously been a mainstay on the window team in the field, and managed a lot of projects, so this change of focus for him was certainly felt at Bagala Window Works. Carl and Marc decided that Carl would turn his attention to the new Window Restoration Supply business, run the shop, and manufacture the weatherstripping. Carl’s career suddenly made a big shift – from installer to manufacturer. It’s a perfect fit for Carl, who loves a good challenge as he produces and works to perfect operations every day.
Like his brother, Carl also appreciates anything “original”, so he genuinely enjoys keeping all these old machines running and producing like always. Machines that should be in a preservation museum are in the shop and still running instead! He also wants to take the business to the next level – making sure that the craft continues, that the products readily available, and end users understand installing the products fully. He is happy to help professional installers or novice homeowners – he just wants to make sure these superior products continue to save old wooden windows and doors and make them efficient.
Carl lives in Gorham with his wife, Rita, of 31 years. They are very active grandparents of two young grandsons. He enjoys afternoons chasing his very busy toddler grandson around. After his very busy physical days, he relaxes watching sports.
